Navigating Early Athletic Success

It happens frequently, a young player has an epic break through at a major event. Then what? Ideally the player will stay on course but with new opportunities at their beck and call there are many distractions. With epic success there is a lot new tasks to manage. A player needs a progressive, stable team around them to navigate the many new demands on their time and energy. This includes, continuing to develop new technical, strategic, mental, physical skills. This is an intense task that requires nurturance, persistence and experiential practice.  Now that the player has obtained a major milestone of success the expectation from oneself and others can become a barrier to moving forward. 

Alongside of the challenges with managing success, great opportunities become available.  A professional player should take the time to learn the pieces of the business side of their career and take part in the decision making process. Knowledge is basic to feeling a sense of control and direction. Endorsement agreements, media conferences, becoming and remaining visible on social media is time consuming but important in managing their athletic image and connection to the fans.

In this first article Emma Raducanu mentions she wishes she had not won the U.S. Open, which she did in 2021. She is the first qualifier to win the major and didn’t drop a set in the process.  Since then she has incurred injuries that have kept her off the playing circuit.  In the article she mentions the mental side of the sport has been difficult. The mental side of tennis on and off the court is an ongoing challenge of the sport. There are few breaks in the tournament schedule.  Enduring longevity requires managing and building breaks into your playing calendar to receive the  physical and mental rest to be eager and ready to play. In this second article Billie Jean King responds to Emma Raducanu and shares information that WTA resources offer that she can tap into for developing more control over the journey forward in the professional tennis arena. Raducanu has proven she can play and play in big events. This last article about the resurgence of American tennis player Sofia Kenin is a useful template to think about. Emma Raducanu may feel bounced around in this minute but using the resources at her disposal let’s hope to see her re-emerge as a player to watch going forward.
